Put in our place.
After the war, when thousands of our boys went to their death, we, the UK had a massive labour shortage. This meant the gap between the wealthy and the poor tightened. The average man became valued, and needed. You could walk out of a job in a morning, and start a better one at dinner. The big bosses needed help to prevent the whip hand being gained. Rich and famous people had to pay high wages to attract cleaners, joiners, plumbers, shop floor labourers. They feared equality, and had to act.How could the ruling classes eat in the same restaurants as their employees? Cars and holidays were enjoyed by riff raff too, and something must be done.
The media created a frenzy, and told of disaster to come if something was not done.It was decided to equal things out, they would migrate low level workers from countries like our own, to help put the working class back in their place. After lots of debate, and many studies, they chose Americans,Austrailians,Canadians, to come to our country and help with the shortage. They were all English speaking, Christians and familiar with our customs. Or was this a fairy tale?
