On 17th January 2013, Lance Armstrong is due to appear on Oprah Winfrey to give his first interview since being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles for multiple doping and conspiracy to dope offences. The strong rumours doing the rounds are that Armstrong is ready to make some kind of confession. It's no surprise he's has chosen Oprah for this interview as it's just about the softest one he can get, in front of an audience of sympathetic housewives. Now, anyone who is familiar with the story of Lance Armstrong will know that he does not take a course of action, or even open his mouth without a thorough cost benefit analysis of its impact. He would not do this unless he was 100% certain it would benefit his bank account or reputation. This interview has got me wondering what he's got up his sleeve (aside from scars from all those EPO injections). One thing is for sure though, it will have been planned down to the most minute detail, and he will know exactly what he can and cannot say to avoid landing in some real hot water in terms of law suits and perjury cases. Throughout his career Armstrong used cancer (the very disease he claimed to despise and want to cure) as a barrier to shield himself from questions and allegations of doping, so I see no reason now why he won't revert to type and deliver a huge load of cancer-centric bullshit. My personal prediction is something along the lines of 'I wanted to win the tour to inspire all those cancer sufferers and show that it is possible to beat this disease and achieve great thing. However, everyone in Europe was doping and in order to do that and provide hope to millions of cancer sufferers around the world I too had to take those same drugs'.
